What’s Your Fabulous?

I once wore a necklace that read “Fabulous”. My friends gave me the nickname “Amy

Fabulous” years ago. I didn’t really understand why they found this name appropriate until they explained their reasoning. So, with laughter, grace and gratitude, I accepted their proposed title. That being said, a few years back, I discarded the necklace. I did not feel worthy of the mere mention of the word, nor felt worthy of anything. During that time, I was a victim of domestic violence and made the choice to divorce my now ex-perpetrator-husband.

Now, as a happily divorced Survivor and living a transformed-fabulous-life on my terms, I was recently gifted a necklace that reads “Amy Fabulous”. With much gratitude, I accepted it and proudly own the title once again. Actually, more fabulous than before. ;)

A dear friend and mentor of mine recently sang “I am what I am” from “La Cage Aux Folles”, and although I had performed in this musical long ago, I felt deeply moved as though I was hearing it for the first time. Maybe it is partially due to the no-longer-silent-voice of social awareness regarding injustices and intolerances for equal human rights that have now thankfully taken center spotlight, including domestic violence awareness. Or maybe, it was my releasing my personal latent feelings of guilt, shame and blame, as well a few others, for leaving my perpetrator. My so-called “perfect life”. A sibling, in disbelief of the the truth I found the courage to finally disclose and speak about, expressed to me that she thought “he was a man who provided me with a fabulous life and could “handle me”, why would I leave him?” Ultimately, I came to take ownership that it was I who created a fabulous life, am still creating my fabulous life and can handle myself just fine. Thank you.

Merriam-Webster defines “Fabulous” as: amazing, astonishing, astounding, awesome, marvelous, stupendous, sublime, surprising, wonderful. I am curious as to how you may describe yourself? What have you discovered about your fabulous-self? You see, we all have it. Sometimes, we may just need to learn and define it more clearly for ourselves, and decide. After all, I am what I am; as are you. And, that’s fabulous!
